About us

Introducing the garden and our family

Welcome to Cae Hir...

…the Welsh Garden with a Dutch History, where Nature and Design Meet and Mingle

First and foremost a family garden,

we are proud to have been an RHS Partner Garden for 18 years, having been chosen as one of the original 100! We are equally proud to be one of the original Magnificent 6 - the 'Great Gardens of West Wales'.

Spend  a few hours here to...

  • meander through and explore our peaceful FAMILY GARDEN, designed and created by our dad, developed and cared for by us, and enjoyed by many for over 30 years.

  • treat yourself to Julie's HOME BAKED CAKES and SCONES in Y Sied, the social hub of Cae Hir.

  • find that perfect gift or souvenir as you browse our extensive range of PLANTS FOR SALE - all propagated by Stuart from the garden itself.

Meet the family...

Stuart

Akkermans

Stuart is both head and under-gardener at Cae Hir, having inherited the 'One Man Job' title after our dad's health took a sharp downturn in 2017 and subsequent death in 2020. The garden goes from strength to strength under his guardianship, and he is enjoying putting his own stamp on our family garden.

Julie

Akkermans-Davies

Julie manages the business and runs the tea room; a welcome 'Jakk of all Trades' but a true master of only one - baking! Be sure to try one of her cakes or scones - they're good! She welcomes all our visitors with a hearty smile in Y Sied: the social hub of Cae Hir where you will find our reception area, tearoom and plants sales.

Gill

Akkermans

Our mum, who worked as a physiotherapist to keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellies while our dad followed his dream. The unsung hero behind the story of Cae Hir, she continues to be a source of great strength and encouragement to us. Now retired she often helps out in Y Sied, chatting to visitors about the garden's early days.

Wil

Akkermans

Our dad, who initially designed, created and maintained Cae Hir as 'A One Man Job' sadly passed away in late 2020 after a 3 year steady decline in health. He was proud of the way Cae Hir was flourishing in the care of his children, and we are proud to take care of and build upon the business and garden he loved so much.
